I drive from NC to FL and back again too often.
I don't want a huge, ungainly behemoth (again) to make that drive. For holidays spent there, though, I definitely need more carrying capacity than a typical sedan/coupe can provide. I don't want to go through the hassle of a hitch, either for a trailer or just a basic hitch-mounted rack... in part because the new ride I'm considering doesn't have a hitch option that I've found.
Here's my off the wall question: how about a watertight storage bag in the rough shape of the back end of a station wagon? Something that can secure with straps like a strap-on bike rack (heh - I said strap-on). I could see the top of the back window interface being difficult - how do you keep that from raising up into the wind? But other than that, it seems like a tailor-made place for more, temporary storage. Get to your destination, remove it and stuff in the trunk. Ready to go home, put it back up. No more lost visibility than in a fully-stuffed minivan / SUV.
Am I missing something here? Or just the opportunity to make millions? Or more likely to lose thousands trying for those millions?

That seams like a huge potential to scratch the fuck out of the paint on the trunk/dent it.

Rental car is always the answer.

Use a internal tent-like frame and a crossframe to make it stiff.

Sure does - that's part of the challenge.
I have a similar thing, though, for an SUV - a canvas top carrier. It has an almost tacky foam layer that goes in contact with the roof itself, making it both cushioned and unlikely to move.

Not quite.
What I was thinking of was a soft unit that lays on the trunklid and back window of the car, effectively filling out the profile to that of a station wagon.

Good thought!
Also, nice screen name. I suspect you ride; I to as well - not as much as I'd like, but a fair amount.
